When my dad passed away, I kept his shirts knowing I would someday work with them. These practical garments are almost all short sleeved for function – not needing to roll them up if work presented itself, and comfort, they all have a similar softness to the touch. More significantly, he chose them because he found them aesthetically pleasing; the patterns are mostly plaid with a few exceptions in stripes, solids and floral. The title evokes another aspect of my father’s character: his willingness to do anything to help another person, including giving away his last remaining possessions. With this project I want to honour my dad by creating a portrait expressed in pattern and colour. These intimate belongings speak strongly to me of his integrity, strength and stability, warmth, gentleness and playfulness.
